Salt Lily Magazine was born out of tender vision: to nurture a celebratory and intimate online and print space for SLC's art and music community. By showcasing this City's vibrant artistic diversity, we hope to invite others to participate in their own artistic potential. This magazine is a love letter to all the feral outcasts of SLC.

Angie Petty: Love In Form

Angie Petty: Love In Form

Her mother is a singer. Her father started a music-workout company. Her uncle plays the bass. Her brothers play the guitar and the drums. And her aunt is also a singer. She says it best herself, “It kinda just runs in my family.” Passion for music didn’t skip Angie Petty, as she has spent her entire life devoted to its craft. She spent the first years of her life singing, however she soon became too unconfident in her abilities and gravitated towards competitive dancing. But her love for singing resurfaced towards the end of her high school career, at which point she began to attend the School of Rock in Sandy, Utah to bolster her abilities.

But soon after enrolling, she realized she didn’t have much experience writing her own songs. However, that changed at the School of Rock, where she was able to learn more about becoming a musician. They provided lessons to practice musical instruments and programs to progress their musical abilities. In many of her classes, she was forced to write, and though initially terrified at the prospect, she would eventually fall in love with it. And though she is still in the process of finding her sound, her current songs are deeply inspired by a number of musicians, some of the most prominent being Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin. She does find it hard to define her sound to a single genre, but there are clear links to R&B and Soul, similar to the likes of SZA and Jhené Aiko-- incorporating instruments like trumpets and electronic effects into her music. As her sound progresses, she simultaneously expands her scope of writing by collaborating with a number of different artists and producers.

An example of her collaborations is her new single, “Feel It All Feat. Jay Warren”. Jay Warren is an established R&B musician in Salt Lake City who worked with Angie in creating, singing, and producing the song.Their song is about the rollercoaster that is life and the importance of embracing all of your emotions openly, both positive and negative. The single was meant to be released a few months back, but Angie never really felt ready until May 29, which coincidentally timed perfectly with the COVID-19 pandemic. The last few months have been a rollercoaster of emotions for many people, and this song connects to those feelings and lets them loose.

Angie currently has two singles out, one being her collaboration with Warren, and the other being her song “Something Special”. However, she plans to release a much larger body of work in October. While the development is still underway, the subject of the body of work is something that Angie has no doubt about-- she wants it to be about love. In her life, she has been profoundly affected by her relationships with other people, and even recently got married. Her work focuses on the many different forms that love comes in, from giving and receiving to self-love. While she is the first to admit that love is by no means a new subject when it comes to songwriting, it’s too profound and inspirational to be ignored.

As an artist who loves what she does, she has goals for the future and expects to fulfill them. Over the next few years, she wants to release a few albums, allowing her work to be more readily available for everyone. She wants to expand her fanbase enough to be able to open for bigger names visiting SLC. And she wants to spread her art across the globe through tours, and by networking and collaborating with other artists. But for now, Angie can be found on Instagram and Tiktok, and under pre-(and hopefully post-)pandemic circumstances, performing with her local cover band, Lounge 40

Her music is available to stream on all platforms, and as a final message from Angie Petty herself, “Anybody who is reading this, if you want to check out my music, that’d be awesome! I’m always looking to connect with people, and hopefully, my music inspires you. You can find me under Angie Petty everywhere or @apettymusic [her handle on most social media sites].”
