Autumn Walk
in the evening
light thrusts through fans of leaves
a small mammal
trembles in the softening shadow
within a bush by the sidewalk
the woman walks alone unhurried
among the subtle hum of the streets
leaves crack under her feet
like plates of soil in a dry wash
many others walk nearby
all of them partaking in the light
that slowly abandons them
